Between the mouth of the Coto River to the south of Golfito and Punta Banco, where the coast goes out to sea before the Panamanian border, there is one of the most secluded beaches in Costa Rica. With an extension of 8 kilometers, and an excellent place to go surfing, on the Pacific Central American coast, it has the second largest left in the world; it is located 15km to the south of Zancudo.
How to arrive and leave
There is a daily bus that leaves from Burica Ranch to Golfito at 5.00 a.m and picks up tourists along the way, it passes by La Ponderosa and Esquina del Mar. Returning from Golfito at 3:00 p.m. A 4X4 taxi costs some 60 US$ from Golfito.
Go down Avenida Central in San José heading towards Barrio de San Pedro and then continue onwards towards Cartago. Before you get to Cartago there is an intersection, take a right turn here and continue without turning off until you get to San Isidro del General (Pérez Zeledón) you will begin to go up into the mountains. This road is called the Southern Interamericana. Passing through the “cerro de la muerte” you will go up some 3.400 meters in altitude, where you will find it is very cold and often rains. You will then begin your descent. Do not drive too quickly and be careful with the rocks on the road. Once you are in San Isidro, head towards Palmar Norte. After Palmar Norte you will get to Río Claro, here you will find a petrol station and then, continue in the direction of Golfito and after some 14 kilometers; on the left hand side there is a turn off to Pavones. After some 15 minutes you will arrive at a river that you can cross a Bridge, there are crocodiles, after another 15 minutes you will get to Conté on a gravel road. After Conté follow the signs to Pavones, the view of the mountains and the ocean are impressive, the road begins with potholes and stones. You will also need to take care when crossing the small bridges.
In San José you can buy a ticket for the bus at the Tracopa terminal. It is better to buy the ticket a day in advance, especially at weekends. The bus departs at 7:00 a.m heading towards Golfito, and arrives at approximately 2:30 p.m. In Golfito the bus to Pavones departs at 3:00 p.m, the bus stop is close to the supermarket opposite the hospital.
