Guanacaste Traditions

The marimba is a popular expression that reflects the Guanacaste culture. The tradition and popular oral history is fundamental in the understanding of the villages. In Guanacaste there are two important events that are celebrated every year, that of the Cristo Negro de Esquipulas and in the month of December the devotion of the Virgin of Guadalupe. A large part of Guanacaste culture has marks of this tradition and religious devotion as well as arts and crafts fares, food, bull fights and civic or religious parties and the folkloric dance “Punto Guanacasteco”. A special mention should be made for marimba music, how it is played and its design. This is a multicultural instrument, American, African, and even Europe; but was mostly used in the propagation of Guatemalan Chiapaneco. It is mostly used in popular festivals, with the guitar. Jade is a generic term used to refer to the design of two different minerals: black and jade. In our country the word jade is used when talking about any kind of indigenous sculpture that is made from fine stone, generally pendants even though they may be made from quartz, agate or another material. In Costa Rica there are two main centers that make Jade amulets; Guanacaste and the Atlantic Slopes, nevertheless Guanacaste is the oldest in terms of this art.
