4) PLAYA TAMARINDO:
This is a wave that breaks off the river mouth on the north end of Tamarindo; it is a fast moving wave on low tide, a little slower on high tide. Access: By land. Tide: Low and up coming. Swells: Northwest and North. Bottom: Sandy. Feet: 1 to 5. Season: December to March. Stars: 3.
It is 280 kilometers south of San Jose, 30 Km. from Santa Cruz and 67 Km. from Liberia Airport. Instead of going north from Huacas to Brasilito and Flamingo, you turn south; you will be able to take a completely paved road that leads to Tamarindo. Economically, commercial fishing and tourism are both very important, even though you can see more surfers on the streets than local fishermen. Tamarindo is an active fishing town, with a wide beach of white sand and an estuary leading from the Marine National Park. It is located in Tamarindo Bay, framed by the San Francisco Point and Rio Matapalo Estuary. Because of its surge and the windy conditions, this beach is a favorite for surfers and windsurfers. The Capitan Island can be seen at approximately 700 meters from the beach. It is a big rock covered with vegetation. Caution is necessary when swimming here, for there are certain points in the sea which have very strong currents. We recommend asking locals about the appropriate sectors where it is safer to swim.
How to get Here?
The best route to follow to get to Tamarindo is from Belen to Huacas, 12 kilometers south (Villarreal way) continuing south. This route is via tarmac roads. Another possibility is to drive 17 kilometers down the road that connects Santa Cruz with 27 de Abril. From this point continue on for 19 kilometers, along a non paved road up to Villarreal and then continue for 4 Km up to Tamarindo.
The landing field in Tamarindo is located 2.5 kilometers from the north side of the town.
