Playa Montezuma

It is a place of rich ecology. You can enjoy these beaches, by bathing in the sea, contemplating their beauty when the sun sets; discovering rock pools where you can find shells and fish of many different colors. It is surrounded by forest landscape, there are two waterfalls. One 30 minutes away and the other in an hour away on foot, or half an hour on horseback. Montezuma is a very busy coastal destination, and there are an endless amount of tourists that stay here for several days to enjoy not only the beach but the village, there are also natural reserves and activities.



A twenty minute walk will take you to the beautiful waterfall with a natural swimming pool; a footpath, that heads south, take a turnoff to the right crossing over the bridge that is after the hotel and La Cascada restaurant. You can climb, although it is risky, five people have died trying and other have been badly injured, there a small sign warning of these dangers. A second series of waterfalls, some which are even more beautiful, located up stream, up in the mountains.


Playa and Río Piedra Colorado: Empties into the sea. You have to walk heading towards the mountains some 800 meters to find the waterfall and spring. Jake is in charge of carving stone figures at the exit of the river and other parts of the beach.


Playa Grande: It has an aproxímate size of 1 ½ Km. It is a beach suitable for swimming, sunbathing and occasionally surfing.


Playa Cocalito: 400 meters. Suitable for bathing. This is where Mr. Velásquez is located, he has refreshments, coffee and beer available for purcahse and you can appreciate the beautiful landscape of Montezuma, with monkeys, pizotes and other animals. He has owned this property for 24 years and he has lived here for more than 14 years. He lives alone and there is no electricity or a path through the mountain, you can only get to it walking, riding a horse or by boat. From Montezuma until the waterfall you will find two private reserves, where it is prohibited to cut trees.


The Waterfall. With a fall of approximately 30 meters into a pool. In all of these beaches you can rest, bathe, sunbathe and enjoy nature without any sort of danger. It is not advised to bathe close to the rocks.

How to arrive and leave.

By Ferry / By Bus

The ferry that travels from Puntarenas joins with the bus from Paquera to Montezuma. The bus service traveling the opposite way depart at 5:00 a.m, 8:00 a.m, 10:00 a.m, 12:00 m.d, 2:00 p.m and 4:00 p.m that link with the ferry heading towards Puntarenas. The fee is 3 US$. By Bus

In Mal País the terminal is at the side of Hotel Frank’s Place, with two departures from Mal País to San José from Monday to Saturday 04:30 a.m. ferry transportation 6:30 a.m and arriving in San José 10:15 a.m/ 2:30 p.m with ferry transportation 4:30 p.m and arriving from San José 8:00 p.m, costing 10.20 US$. On Sunday two departures from Mal País to San José 8:00 a.m with ferry transportation 10:30 a.m and arriving in San José at 12:00 m.d. / 2:30 p.m ferry transportation 4:30 a.m and arriving in San José 08:00 p.m. The journey from San José is via the Puntarenas ferry terminal. Paquera, Tambor, Cobano, Montezuma and Mal País. Buses are given priority on the ferry along with their passengers and luggage. The vehicles are modern 2006 Marcopolo Scania, with covered reclining seats, Air Conditioning and television. The tariffs only include the bus pass.

The buses from Cobano leave at 9:15 a.m, 10:30 a.m, 11:30 a.m, 2:30 p.m., 3:15 p.m and 6:30 p.m. Departures to Santa Teresa. Schedule: 6:45 a.m and 11:15 a.m. Departures to Mal País. Schedule: 7:00 a.m and 11:30 a.m. There are buses that leave from Frank’s Place or El Cruce at 7:15 a.m, 8:30 a.m, 10:45 a.m, 11:40 a.m, 01:15 p.m and 3:45 p.m. The price of a taxi from Cobano is 15 US$. There are services between Montezuma and Cabo Blanco 2 US$, departs 8:00 a.m, 9:50 a.m, 2:10 p.m and 6:30 p.m.
