NICOYA PENINSULA

The Nicoya Peninsular stands out more than 110 kilometers to the south of the extreme northeast of Costa Rica and it is the largest Peninsular in the country. Visitors can enjoy beautiful views of the coast, go swimming, sunbathe and go surfing. In this area you can also discover isolated beaches and small villages. There are some natural reserves, and a national park that you can visit. The main highway begins in Liberia and goes into the heart of the Peninsular, passing by villages such as Filadelfia and Santa Cruz, until you get to Nicoya, the largest village in the area.

Activity Coco Beach

It is one of the best areas for snorkeling in the north Pacific. It is easy to go snorkeling close to the coast and to go on excursions at nearby scuba diving points. Serious scuba divers can enjoy trips to Catalina Island, half an hour from the coast, and to Murciélagos Island, some 90 minutes by boat from Coco. Experienced snorkellers can see a large amount of sharks in Murciélagos and stingrays in Catalina.

OCOTAL BEACH

It is 280 Km to the south of San José, 30 km from Santa Cruz and 67 km from the Liberia Airport. Barra Honda National Park

Located in the Tempisque Conservation area, 22 Km to the northeast of the city of  Nicoya, it extends between Nicoya and the mouth of the Rio Tempisque, in a steep rocky limestone area with coastal hills of more than 300 high. There are 40 caves, some with more than 200 mts depth, 19 of which have been explored. Barra Honda is especially interesting for potholers in search of new places to investigate. With 2.295 protected hectares, which have been created to safeguard an area of geological and pot holing interest.

OSTIONAL NATIONAL REFUGE FOR FOREST WILDLIFE

This coastal extends as far as the Nosara and Ostional beaches, to the mouth of the Río Nosara and Ostional village. The reserve is a strip 8 km long and only a few meters wide. The protected land has an extension of 352 hectares and 587 hectares of sea. The main attraction is the annual egg lying of the Lora Turtle in Ostional Beach, whose sands are next to Nancite, in Santa Rosa National Park, they are the mist important and preferred areas in Costa Rica where this phenomenon occurs.

Pacific Ridley Turtle

Known scientifically as “Lepidochelis olivacea”, this amazing species is the smallest marine turtle. It is characterized by its heart shaped shell. It is 67.6 centimeters long with a body mass of 38.1 kilogram’s; females are usually heavier but shorter than the males; on average. The Pacific Ridley Sea Turtle is the most common of the marine species. Costa Rica has been characterized as being a concentrated area for the reproduction of this turtle.

GARZA BEACH

It has moderate to soft surf in the south sector of the bay. It has an extension of approximately 2 km, it has light grey sand. With short headland at both extremes.  You will need to be careful because there is a rocky platform that is hidden during the high tide and at the mouth of the estuary. Its infrastructure, as well as its tourist post is rustic.

Islas Guayabo, Negritos and Pájaros Biological Reserves

Isla Guayabo is located approximately 8 Km to the south of Puntarenas in the Golf of Nicoya. The Negritos Island 16.5 Km to the south and Pájaros Island 13 Km to the northeast of Puntarenas. Guayabo and Negritos Islands where established as reserves with the Executive Decree Nº 2858-A on the 28th of February 1973. Pájaros Island was created by means of the Executive Decree Nº 5963-A. on the 28th of April 1976. Guayabo and Negritos Island have an extension of 143.5 hectares and the Pájaros Island has an extension of 4 hectares.

Tortuga Island

Tortuga Island is the best known Island, and it is made up of two islands that are located some 5km to the southeast of Negritos. You can scuba dive at the beautiful beaches and go on daily excursions from Puntarenas. Tortuga Island is much more than just beach with white sand, it also offers exuberant flora and fauna and adventure, it is a dream island in the Pacific Ocean, today it is a reflection of more than twenty years of hard work by a Costa Rican family who work in the area of conservation and sustainable development.

PAQUERA VILLAGE

Located 25 km from Playa Naranjo, and some 4km from the Paquera ferry terminal. This village is known for its agriculture and cattle. In this area fruits that are exported to other countries are grown here such as the mango, papaya y the melon, it has tourist potential. Such as: Punta Cuchillo situated 2 kilometers from Puerto Paquera, it is a village that is dedicated to fishing, and here you can enjoy the beach and the mountains. Here you will be able to see Cedros and Jesusita Islands and if you want to visit them you can take a boat trip.

Curu National Refuge for wildlife

Curu National Wildlife refuge and Hacienda is located on the southern Nicoya Peninsula of nortwestthern Costa Rica, 6 km from to the Paquera of Puntarenas ferry, on the road to Cobano. The refuge contains approximately 75 hectareas from point Quesera to point Curu. The refuge is included in the private property, which contains 1496 hecatreas. Curu’s property was established in 1933 when the owner, Federico Shutt de la Croix, declared it.

POCHOTE BEACH

It is located 21 km from Paquera in a westerly direction, 3 km from the main road. The beach is apt for swimming, the water here is relatively calm and surprisingly you can walk along on the beach at high tide for some 300 meters out to sea, where the water will only reach your waist.

TAMBOR BEACH (Bahia Ballena) & Beach Quizales

With no strong waves this is one of the best beaches to swimming. It has a scenic beauty, with the sun sand and sea as well as the ecology of its impressive waterfall Sula. Go jet skiing, parasailing, water skiing, sports fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, horse rides, and trips on boat, bicycles and motorcycles. Tambor is located 23 km from the center of Paquera. On the paved road it is recommendable to be careful and not drive faster than 60km per hour because of the amount of curves in the road.

COBANO VILLAGE

Cobano village is located in the south of the Península of Nicoya in the Provincia of Puntarenas; it was a small and quiet village where tourists can visits the pacific coasts.  All of the highways go towards Playa Mal País, Playa Santa Teresa, Playa Cabuya and Playa Montezuma and they go through this village. MAL PAIS BEACH
