The legend of the Esterillos Memaid

The legend of the Esterillos Memaid

The story is about a sphelt bronze figure that has immortalized the experience of a man from Parrita many years ago with a mermaid that they say only came close to the beaches of west Esterillos. It was more than 30 years ago when Fernando Mora arrived to Parrita from Puriscal, during this time the beaches were almost unihabited and there where no access roads and they often used the beaches as a way of access. He walked along the beaches of Esterillos so many times and in the summer of 78 he saw a curious woman with a beautiful figure and with brown skin and only appeared close to the cove, with shock he saw the upper part of the body of the young woman was completely uncovered, she was naked and had long hair, he looked out to the sea everyday to see if he could find the young woman again. Nevertheless he never actually saw the legs of the woman. She was always in the sea. After a few days he became more confident and decided to get closer and ask who she was and why she wasn’t wearing any clothes. Of course the young girl immediately dived into the water and he just managed to catch a glimpse of her enormous tail, he was not convinced that this youngster could be any else but a woman. He continued explaining the day with details when he heard the strange song from the youngster. It was one of those almost red afternoons when the sun sets the young woman was at the side of a rock watching the sunset and singing melodies that no body has ever heard before, almost melancholic, like groans fron goddess that although has everything and the sea was hers, she seemed to be missing something or had lost something. On that day he saw her tail and he tried to hide without success. That mermaid had stopped him in his tracks with a heavenly gaze and he had to get closer. Fernando paused, he stayed watching the sea and suddenly he said “Yes, it was a mermaid, I saw her, she confirmed it with her look from heaven, and with that look she spoke to me in another language and I perfectly understood was she was saying. She told me her very long and sad story; she told me what her future was and what mine was. It is still not time to tell this story. I saw her twice and we spoke, and after that day I never saw her again. I knew that I wasn’t going to see her again, she told me. Since this year I wanted to immortalize her figure, her heavenly gaze, in 1997 I managed to achieve this objective”. Fernando financed the construction of the bronze sculptor and is located on the rocks in the sea, in the malecones, on las caletas opposite the Hotel Sirena.
