The museum, founded in 1992, is located in a building with patrimonial history; it was first located in the Plaza of Comandancia and then the Prison of the city. Later on in 1997 the exhibition was transferred to the Casa de la Cultura de Puntarenas. In 2001 it was opened to the public as a program of the National Museum of Costa Rica.
