To the northeast of the Central Cordillera, two mountain chains in particular stand out: The Tilarán and the Guanacaste Cordillera; both reach as far as the Nicaraguan border. The first is characterized by its undulating mountains, covered in dense forest.
During the years 1888 at only 8km from Santa Elena the mining of gold had already begun in Turín, managed by a Canadian company using workers from Juntas de Abangares and neighbouring villages, like the Juntas and Guacimal mines the neighbouring villages were inhabited until 1919.

From the Interamerican via Santa Elena and Monteverde to the south, the first turnoff is the Rancho Grande, 18 Km to the northeast of the Puntarenas exit, the Rancho Grande bar is located here, and a signpost shows the way to go to get to Sardinal, Guácimal and Monteverde, both on the right hand northern side of the highway, where you will find the gas station.
